the time has come . . .

For a few months now, I've been thinking about unplugging my life, to some extent. I'm sure you can relate to the ever-present online "world," and the more I think about it, the less I want to live there! My heart is here at home with my family, and lately it has become really attractive to pare down and zero in on where my true happiness lies. I want to be a better example to my children, and, overall, I just want to feel more present. In short, I've decided not to blog here anymore. I've been blogging here for almost six years, and it just feels like the time has come to do something else. I used to love the idea of blogging, but with the advent of Pinterest, Instagram, and with the continuation of my family blog, I feel like A Room Somewhere has become superfluous. I have always thought that life is better when it is smaller and simpler, and I have just found better ways to spend my time and be productive. Or maybe I've just rediscovered them.

I never wanted my blog to be anything more than a collection of things that I love. I was not interested in blogging as a career, but as an expression. It has been so fun to connect with readers over the past few years, but I feel that connection has been lost in many ways. (Maybe it's because of Google Reader!) I can't say that I'll never post here again, but for now, I'm moving on. I'm a little sad, but mostly, I feel really good about this decision!

Downton Abbey

Truth be told, my husband and I spent most of our weekend watching season one of the fabulous Masterpiece Classic Series, Downton Abbey. It was at his request that we watch the first episode on Netflix, and we were majorly hooked from there on out. We are now officially caught up and enjoyed season 2, episode 2 last night. I'm enjoying the drama, the laughs, and the characters so much, but there is definitely something to be said for the elegance of the Edwardian age, which is so handsomely portrayed in each scene. I suppose it inspired my weekend in other ways, too. I felt the need to wear my hair up and don some elegant shoes.

I purchased some pillow covers from Ruby + Stella a few years ago and have loved the punch of pattern and color they add to my front room. When I heard that Ruby + Stella now had linen bedding, I was so excited! All of my bedding (with the exception of my sheets) is linen, and I have a major linen addiction. We had a great time in Sundance over Christmas. My parents bought a house there seventeen years ago, and moved from California permanently about 5 years ago. Although I miss the sunshine and the memories of California when we go to visit them now, there is nothing quite like the holidays beneath the grand old mountain.

My husband and I stopped along the road to recall the great moments spent at this spot in Provo. I lived here when we met 14 years ago and we lived here as newlyweds for a time, as well, before moving to Texas.

Only one more day until the kids are home for Christmas break, which means, for me at least, that all errands need to be done by tomorrow! My lovely sister, Stephanie, sent my birthday gift the other day, and when it arrived, I was so excited! She made me this beautiful tartan skirt and it is a perfect fit, I don't know how that girl does it. I was sure she spotted its likeness on the Tartan Roundup I posted a little bit ago, and that she had my husband measure my waist while I was sleeping. I love my new skirt! I wore with with a tee and necklace from Nordstrom and some nude patent pumps from Macy's.

I can't remember where I heard about finger knitting the other day (Pinterest?), but I was dying to try it. I love long, thin scarves. They're perfect for looping, more like a necklace than a scarf! I watched this tutorial and was on my way. I made a twelve-foot long chain, then tied the ends together to make a loop! I plan on making a bunch more for me and for gifts for my friends. (So, friends, don't make one!)

I just so happened to need to be in Dallas the other day, and remembered this post I had seen on Tiny Dallas and thought I'd stop into Milk + Honey, a new shop on Henderson. The secret to the speedy delivery is the combination of Liquid Soy Lecithin and Saf-Instant Yeast, both of which are available here. The Soy Lecithin replaces the fat and/or oil in your recipe, and the instant yeast is, like it says, instant.

My friend, Lindsey, has made Fast Easy Bread available to everyone through her online shop. Then, she fills the blog with incredible recipes for her customers to try. Yesterday, I got to sample her Caramel Apple Cinnamon Braid. So yummy.

DIY Art with Tiny Dallas

Audrey and I joined up with the ladies from Tiny Dallas and other local art-seekers for an event at the Dallas Museum of Art on Saturday. We browsed the collections, focusing on the Mark Bradford exhibit (no photos allowed, but we loved his pieces). Then we all headed over to the former location of Bows and Arrows for a DIY art creation session. Lucia, Joslyn, and Sunny went out of their way to make this wonderful afternoon possible, thank you, ladies! My Audrey (10) has always loved art and prides herself on her ability to draw and paint (she's pretty talented), but while we were in London, she positively soaked up the museum experiences. I vowed to myself to make those same types of activities more available to her here at home. Dallas and Fort Worth have some really exceptional galleries and museums. Needless to say, she had a great afternoon. Here are some photos from my Instagram account (aroomsomewhere).

Have you ever launched your tired self into a Lovesac? Cozy! I have my cold little footsies in these great Lovesac slippers whenever I'm at home these days. I'm loving my local Dallas radio station KKXT lately. It's a public radio music station and they play the best mix (91.7 for locals). Since yesterday, I've heard everything from The Doors to Keane, The Orbans to Snow Patrol, The Cure to New Order. When I heard Bizarre Love Triangle this morning, I was immediately taken back about 15 years. It's amazing how music can do that.

Or, there's the awesome Frente version. Which, if I close my eyes, makes me 18 again.

I got this great cardigan before our trip to England. I figured a trip to England was as good a time as any to order something from fab Britshop, Boden. I love it so much for the unusual color combination, and was finally able to wear it this week in Texas. It dipped down into the 70s for a minute.

I could wear almost everything Boden has launched this fall. I'm loving their style lately. Especially this top. What do you have your eye on for Fall?

I'm all about slowing down these days. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm trying to save money and cut down on our expenses (England was pricey), but I'm longing for quiet mornings around the house, getting things done around here whilst listening to uplifting things or listening to nothing at all. My youngest child is going to school three days a week now, and rather than run around like a crazy lady while he's away, I've been slipping back into my house and being domestic. Or tooling around in the yard, or delving into my book. Hence, I am loving this embroidered calendar kit from Curious Doodles. What a lovely way to while away the hours while the weather cools outside.

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and boys and I went to the Dallas Flea, a smallish flea market put on downtown a couple of times a year. We had a great time, the weather was beautiful, and the goods were great! I picked up a few small things, always sure to keep an eye out for Lauren Essl, my friend who is the artist behind Blue Eye Brown Eye. She had my favorite card in stock, below, and a few new ones, too. Check out Lauren's Etsy shop, here. She does custom work, as well. Friday is upon us and mine is super busy, starting with a PTA meeting in about 20 minutes and ending with a wedding open house (I'm in charge of the food). I enjoy sleeves, and need them for modesty's sake. At eShakti, this is not a problem! I just put the dress in my cart, but asked for the addition of cap sleeves. I love how it turned out! This dress is silk, fully lined and moves beautifully. I'm not usually one for prints, but something about this floral and subtle stripe just really attracted me. The colors are perfect for fall and I happened to have some mustard yellow heels that went along with it so well. I love the 40s flair of this swingy dress, and so wore my hair in a slightly vintage style.

I had a great weekend, and what I thought would be a lazy Monday turned rather hectic by lunchtime. Ah, such is life. I was immersed in my reading of East of Eden most of last week. It's a phenomenal book, which shouldn't have surprised me, considering how much I loved The Grapes of Wrath. John Steinbeck has an amazing way of looking at humanity, and East of Eden is a prime example of his musings. I highly recommend a read! A few of my friends have been reading it this month, too (book club), and we got together to watch the 1955 film version the other night.

Some of them hadn't seen James Dean in a movie yet. It was eye opening for them, if you know what I mean. He was so adorable, and especially vulnerable (yet tough) as Caleb Trask. The movie leaves out some major plot portions (like the whole first half and the very end of the book), but it was still fun to watch.

So I bought this dress earlier this summer from Vacation Vintage, on Etsy, thinking I would wear it to my sister's wedding. I couldn't zip it up, though, (it was so close!) so I had to keep shopping (and exercising). I was feeling particularly great about myself on Sunday morning, I guess, after 3 workouts in one week, so I tried on the dress. And it fit! Hooray! I love it, it's the perfect shade of pink. I paired it with navy peep toes that have pink polka dots all over them.

All summer long, I try to get away with wearing as few layers as possible, which usually ends up in the same outfit over and over again (t-shirt, lightweight skirt), but come Fall, I love to start layering my clothes. So, a few outfits from our England trip and one from home.

The dress I wore to my sister's wedding was this one from Boden. It was on backorder and arrived the night before I left! Ack! I love it; it's a great fit and the textured wool made me feel dressed up enough.

Lake Titicaca Dress from Shabby Apple. I bought this dress as a back up for the wedding in case the Boden one didn't arrive. It's a fun dress, but I think I would have felt a little casual in a cotton dress for that special day. Also, I ended up needing a size smaller than I originally ordered. It runs big, in fact, I think the bodice could still be taken in a bit near the waist. I love the Peter Pan collar and the pleating, though. It's a bit schoolgirl, but still chic.

My family and I went to England to see my youngest sister marry her sweetheart, Toni, a delightful German man whom she has been dating for a few years. I remember the night she met him; she called me all the way from Oxford to tell me about how amazing he was. And here they were, exchanging rings just steps from where they met. It was magical.

This Instagram photo my sister took is my favorite one of the day. The ceremony took place in the Exeter College Chapel, which is centuries old.

Aren't they beautiful together?

Julianne's dress was originally made and worn around 1910. We were amazed at its perfection. Not only did it fit her like it was made for her, but it is in impeccable condition!

That evening, we had a lovely dinner with the wedding guests in the Old Library on Radcliffe Square. I couldn't get over all the beauty of these venues. Oxford can not be beat in the historical, romantic atmosphere.

Fall at Zara Kids

We headed to Dallas for some shopping on Saturday. Needed good walking shoes for the kids and some pants for the husband. Of course, Audrey and I had to stop into Zara. It is my favorite place to shop for her! They even had this great London tee that she can wear on the plane ride over on Thursday!

Every tween needs a denim jacket, and this gauzy red dress was so sweet with the floral slip underneath.

I thought Zara was now shipping to the US, but I can't find that option on their site. Does anyone know? Just a rumor?

City Walks

I am quite familiar with London, as I spent most of my time there walking the city on my own. (Though I'm excited to see Trafalgar Square pedestrianized, that's news to me!) But I was still so excited to pick up City Walks with Kids London, to have some preplanned jaunts around town and to be able to point out important or interesting spots to the children. I took a few cards out of the box and put them in our travel folder. We are getting so excited! You can pick up this little set right here in my bookstore! (They come in other cities, too.)

Two weeks from yesterday, my little family is flying across the vast pond to see my sister marry in beautiful, timeless Oxford, England. I am beyond excited, but not nearly ready! (Oh, the packing!) My kids can't believe how "old" England is; we have been learning lots about the history and sights over the past week or so. I plan to have them all fully educated and excited as I am by the time we board the plane. I haven't been back to England since I studied there the Spring Term of my Junior year in college. I am over the moon that we get to be there for such a special occasion! After a few days in Oxford, we will spend several in London. I booked a hotel right in the part of Kensington where I lived for a moment all those years ago!
